Meekness and lowliness aren't for weak
Meekness and lowliness are dirty words in our culture. People associated them with weakness. But the Bible never associated them weakness. Just the opposite, meekness is power under control and lowliness is the path to greatness. We must learn that to be the greatest you must be the least.
The picture that comes to my mind when it comes to meekness and lowliness are the old kung fu movies. In the movies there are always bullies who are loud. They are strong and champions in their art. In their pride they think they can unbeatable. Then there is always this old man (or a young protagonist) who looks weak and unassuming. While the bullies are loud in their boastfulness, this old man tries to be unassuming as possible and even leave the area. The bullies thought this is weakness and tried to hurt the old man much to their regret. That lowly and meek old man happens to be some secret super martial arts expert.
Not all of us know martial arts. I am not. You probably are not. But we can control our power. We can choose to use it for good and not for harm. The old master could have used his martial prowess to dominate others. He didn't. He place it under control. And he isn't loud. He is lowly. This is what lowliness and meekness are.
In the old days, a meek horse is a very powerful horse that responds to a slight touch of its owner. The horse is more powerful than its owner. But it is meek. It is power under control.
If we understand this analogy, we will want to be meek and lowly without shame. God is our owner. At His touch He controls us. Being meek doesn't mean you're weak against other people. It means your power is under control by God.
Many Christians think that loudness is virtue. It isn't. Sometimes the quiet one has more depth and has more impact. He doesn't speak much but when he does it comes with power.
Our meek and lowly Lord turned tables and whipped oxen at the temple. There is no contradiction because meekness isn't weakness. It is power under control. His zeal for God controlled Him. The same meekness shows when He submit to God's plan for Him to die at the Cross in the hands of sinful men. He could have destroyed them with His Word. He didn't. His power is under the control of God.
As bearers of Christ's name CHRISTians, we should be likewise meek and lowly. It is our badge.
