I want to be known for what I believe, not what I am against
I have no problem with refuting errors. But I don't want to be known for what I am against than what I am for.
This is true for all aspects of life. There are so many political critics but few advocates of alternatives. Spiritually, there are people who are fond of pointing the errors of other religions but have no doctrine to teach.
Instead of bashing what you hate, a more productive use of time is to teach what you believe. In a marketplace of ideas the best way to disarm a contrary idea is to teach the correct idea.
I can preach against sin all day (and we should preach against sin), but without a positive teaching of holiness, it is unlikely my listeners will benefit. They will just add another thing to hate in their hate list.
But if I preach Christ, and my listeners come to believe and love Him, they are likelier to forsake sin. We all have experienced loving someone so much we are willing to give up certain things that annoy our loved ones. We should develop a love for Christ that is stronger than sin. And we cannot do that by being a sin basher. We develop that love by teaching doctrine.
If your preaching spends more time bashing sin than preaching Christ, you misunderstand the gospel. Sin is not a good news. Christ is the good news. Sure, preach against sin if it is in your text. Otherwise, instruct in holiness.
As the saying goes, if I saw a banana peeling, I will pick it up so others will not slip but I won't spend my time picking the banana peelings all over the world. It will be more productive to teach people how to dispose peelings properly.
I want to be knows as a gracious grace teacher rather than a rabid hell and brimstone preacher. Both grace and judgment are important topics but if I will err in overemphasizing, I'd rather overemphasize grace.
