What does the numbers mean?
My typical Deadlift Day looks like this: 1x10x (29kg, 35kg, 41kg, 47kg, 52kg) and 3x10x57kg barbell deadlifts. That's 80 lifts for a total of 3750 kilograms lifted in our workout. Pretty impressive no?
"I lifted 3750 kilograms!"
That sounds very impressive until you start thinking what it means. It doesn't mean I lifted a barbell weighing 3750 kilograms. In fact if you compute the average, 3750/80 equals 47 kilograms. That means on the average I am lifting 47 kilograms. Suddenly my lifts don't sound impressive.
I have seen lifters weight 500 kilograms. I have seen someone push press 100 kg Kettlebells. What took me 80 lifts some elite lifters can surpass in 10 lifts.
Numbers have meaning only when interpreted.
Yet many times we allowed ourselves to be occupied by numbers.
Someone earns 100 000 a month and we're all impressed. That is a huge number. But when the bills and the obligations are removed, sometimes you are left with a few hundreds until the next salary.
Others are impressed with the number of cars. Say a man has 10 cars. That's too many no? Until one realizes no matter how many cars one owned, he can only ride one at a time.
We can cite other examples but I think you get the idea- we're not to worship or be so impressed with numbers.
Yet pastors can fall for this trap. More members are better, no? Say 1000 members. But if out of 1000 members, only 10 are actively serving, how is your church better than a smaller 40-member church where everyone is working? If you ask me, the 40-member church is bigger.
Others fall for the budget game. Other churches have millions in their operating expenses whereas Bible churches are fortunate to survive a year. But if the million dollar church isn't teaching the gospel, the million dollars are nothing but silver and gold that perish with the members.
Rather than fall for the numbers game, we need to focus on feeding Christians so they can live the spiritual life and glorify God. Numbers are good if they're interpreted, otherwise they're just numbers.
Keep on focusing on grace. Let no man tells you how to think.
