Bakit ako nag-decide na mag-celebrate ng Pasko

 

Marahil nagtataka kayo kung bakit kailangan kong sumulat ng justification para mag-celebrate ng Pasko. Sa isang bansang may napakahabang Pasko, it is a given na mag-celebrate. So bakit kailangan kong ipaliwanag kung bakit. Hayaan ninyong magpaliwanag ako. 

THE BACKGROUND 

Nanampalataya ako sa Panginoong Jesucristo sa isang Bible Church na hindi nagse-celebrate. Not knowing anything else, naturally, tumigil din ako mag-celebrate. Habang ang iba ay nagse-celebrate including my family, ako hindi; ni hindi nga ako dumadalo sa Christmas Party. For the first decade of my Christian life, itinuring ko ang Pasko bilang unbiblical and pagan celebrations. Lalong napagtibay ito nang hiramin ko sa Pastor ang aklat ni Ralph Woodrow na Mystery Babylon Religion. Sa laki ng impluwensiya nito sa akin, naghanap ako ng personal na kopya nito. 

MAY NAPANSIN AKO

Naively, I thought lahat ng Bible Christians ganuon din. Nang yumakap sa ultradispensationalism ang aming pastor, kumalas ako sa simbahan. Napakalaki ng differences to chalk it up sa disagreement over non-essentials. Nagi akong taper at nagsimulang um-order ng mga tapes, books, CDs, etc mula sa mga Bible ministries. Dahil influenced ni R. B. Thieme, Jr. ang aming simbahan, natural um-order ako sa kanila. To my surprise, may Christmas services sila. Same thing sa naging favorite kong Bible teacher- si Robbie L. Dean, Jr. Paano nangyaring ang magagaling na expositors na ito ng Biblia ay nag-oobserve ng tinuturing kong pagan and unbiblical custom?

Nagsimila rin akong lumahok sa mga FB discussion pages. Doon ko na-realize na ang mga Cristiano ay hati sa isyu ng Pasko. May naniniwalang ito ay unbiblical at hindi dapat ipangilin. Mayroong naniniwalang dapat itong ipangilin. Mayroon ding naniniwalang it's a matter of conscience. Majority ng circle na aking iniikutan- FG Dispensationalists- ay nag-o-observe. Ang awkward tuloy kapag Pasko at bumabati ng Merry Christmas sa messenger o sa FB. Paano ako sasagot ng Merry Christmas too kung ako mismo ay hindi nag-o-observe?

Nagsimula akong magsiyasat. Nagtanong ako sa mga FB pages. Nagbasa ng mga articles at blogs upang malaman kung dapat ba o hindi na i-observe ang Pasko. Hindi ko maiwasang mapansin na majority nang ayaw mag-Pasko ay mga cults, practitioner ng ibang religions, mga atheists at mga pagans. Paano naging pagan celebration ang Pasko kung ang mga pagans ay hindi naniniwalang si Christ ang reason for Christmas? 

Sinimulan ko ring i-challenge ang mga reasons for opposing Christmas. Sabi nga ng isang theologian, challenge the assumptions. Napakaraming apologetic pages ang aking binisita at binasa to come to the bottom of this. Ang Christmas ba ay pagan o hindi?

WHY NOT JUST READ THE BIBLE?

I-anticipate ko na ang tanong, "Bakit ka aasa sa sulat ng iba? Sa Bible ka pumunta." First nag-a-assume ang nagtanong na hindi ko muna siniyasat ang Biblia. Pangalawa, nag-a-assume ang taong ito na ang mga teologo at pastor na sumulat ng blogs ay hindi nagbabasa ng Biblia. Pangatlo, feeling ng taong ito siya lang ang nagbabasa ng Biblia. 

Let us say it straight. Silent ang Bible kung dapat bang mag-celebrate ng Pasko o hindi. Binanggit sa Biblia ang kapanganakan ni Cristo sa NT at daang-daang propesiya sa OT ang natupad sa Firts Advent. Pero hindi nagbanggit kung dapat bang i-celebrate o hindi ang birthday ni Jesus. Yet alam ni Lukas na dose si Cristo nang mawala at alam ding nasa trenta si Cristo nang mag-ministri so there must be a way for the Biblical authors to track his birthdays. 

I-anticipate ko na rin ang objection: Kapag hindi sinabi sa Biblia, hindi ito dapat gawin. And yet marami tayong ginagawa na hindi nakasulat sa Biblia pero alam nating hindi mali. Ang iba nga ay incorporated sa ating worship services including Bible service every Sunday; uses of music instruments, projectors, kuryente, and come to think if it Bible; centrality ng one man minister and centrality of sermons, at marami pang iba. 

I-anticipate ko na rin: sinabi ng Biblia na alalahanin ang Kaniyang kamatayan through Lord's Supper pero hindi ang Kaniyang birthday. Yet by the same argument wala ring sinabi ang Biblia na hindi dapat alalahanin ang Kaniyang birthday. 

REASONS KUNG BAKIT NAG-DECIDE AKONG MAGPASKO

So matapos kong basahin ang mga pros at cons kung dapat bang mag-observe ng Pasko, nakita kong mas mabigat ang dahilan para mag-Pasko. So sasagutin ko very briefly (kung gusto ninyo nang mas mahaba, maraming resources na sinulat ng mga teologo ang makikita sa internet) ang ilan sa mga objections na naririnig ko sa aming simbahan laban sa pagpa-Pasko. 

1. Ito ay celebration ng world. I am not even sure why this is an objection. Natural lang na mag-celebrate ang world:

Luke 2:13-14

[13]And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

[14]"Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased."

Ngayon kung sasabihin na ito ay worldliness, dapat nating alalahaning ito ay worldly kung ip-in-o-promote nito ang purposes ng sanlibutan at iyon ay ilayo ang mga tao kay Cristo. Doubtful na ang isang okasyong nagse-celebrate ng birthday ni Cristo ay maglalayo ng tao kay Cristo maliban sa mga taong talagang ayaw kay Cristo. 

2. Ang Christmas ay pagan occasion. Walang pagan na nagse-celebrate ng Pasko. Nakikiisa sila sa festive mood ng December but by definition as pagans, they will never celebrate CHRISTmas. Kaya nga yung iba Yule ang tawag nila. Maaaring same month and even same date pero two totally different occasions. 

3. Ang Christmas ay may pagan origins. Una sa lahat may mga researches disproving and disputing this. Tingnan ninyo ang mga resources lahat. 

And even if, granting without conceding ang pagan origins ng Christmas, genetic fallacy ang sabihing just because pagan ang origin ay pagan na ang event. Through the years nagbabago ang panahon at kasama rito ang meaning ng isang bagay. Sabihin nating originally ito ay pagan event, walang Cristiano ngayon ang nagse-celebrate nito to worship the pagan gods. Mas problema pa nga ang practical atheism ng pag-celebrate (ilan ba ang nagpa-Pasko with a secular mindset?) kaysa pagan worship. May kilala ba kayong Christians na nag-Pasko by offering sa pagan gods?

Ang irony ay may mga tutol sa Pasko na maagang maaga sumamba sa araw na dedikado sa pagsamba sa araw. Yes, Sunday is originally Day of the Sun. Just as hindi natin iniisip na ang sumasamba ng umagang umaga sa Day of the Sun ay sumasamba sa araw just because they worship on Sunday, hindi rin natin dapat isiping ang nagpa-Pasko ay ginagawa ito as part of pagan worship. 

Ang likelier na nanggari ay ang mga pagans ang nag-coopt ng Christian celebration. 

4. Nobody knew the birthday of Christ; pinili ang December 25 to coincide with Saturnalia, Sol Invictus, Mithraism o kung ano pang favorite non-Christian agricultural events. Well this objection carries its own refutation- Christmas is not pagan; it is anti-pagan. 

5. It is a Catholic event kaya nga may mass sa pangalan. No problem. Alisin natin ang mass. Tawagin nating Christ Day. O Incarnation Day. O kung ano pang gusto ninyong pangalan. Catholicism have no monopoly on Christmas. May nabasa pa nga akong libro na anthology ng mga British atheists na nagse-celebrate ng Christmas! They don't believe in Christ but they like the festive spirit, the emphasis on giving, the family interconnectedness, etc, etc. Ang point ko ay just because my mass sa pangalan ay Catholic na ito. 

6. We do not know the birth of Christ. True although may ancient fathers within the 1st and 2nd century na nagsasabing Christ was born on December 25. Presumably Jesus was killed the day He was conceived (March) so he was born nine months later in December. May tutol na hindi pwede sa December dahil winter daw; sabihin nating oo, sa tingin ninyo paano pakakainin ng isang pastol ang kaniyang mga tupa pag winter? My point is even in winter, kailangan pa ring magpastol ng mga tupa. Maaaring it is cumbersome, but it has to be done. 

Ngayon sabihin nating hindi talaga December 25 at ito ay tradition lang. Wala akong nakikitang problema na i-celebrate ang birthday ni Jesus sa isang araw na hindi naman niya talaga birthday. The important point is celebrating the day that God incarnated Himself in Christ. Sabihin nating naganap yan ng October. E di October natin alalahanin. But most people chose to celebrate it on December 25. In my opinion mas mahalagang i-celebrate ang araw kaysa magpokus sa eksaktong araw. Ang birthday ko ay July pero madalas nadedelay ang celebration namin until katapusan ng July kasi walang pera. Will celebrating it in a wrong day (July 31 rather than July 3) invalidate my birth? 

7. It is commercialized. I agree. Then the solution is to celebrate it simply. Focus in Christ in CHRISTmas rather than partying. 

8. It is not commanded in the Bible to observe His birthday. By the same token, it isn't commanded not to celebrate either. Many people used cars on the way to church even though the Bible did not command the use of cars. 

9. Maraming unbiblical traditions like Christmas tree, carols, Father Christmas etc. Agreed although since the Bible is silent on Christmas mas akmang sabihing ang mga ito ay nonbiblical o abiblical. Hindi siya against sa Bible dahil hindi naman siya nabanggit sa Bible. Father Christmas is just a metaphor so if you don't like himz ditch him. Do the same sa mga tinuturing mong against the Bible. Instead why not conduct a Bible study on Incarnation or the Fulfillment ng Prophecies during the First Advent? 

In the end, it is non-essential for salvation. The issue in salvation is do you believe in Christ or not; not celebrate or not celebrate. It is non-essential for sanctification either. 

Hayaan ang bawat isa ng gamitin ang kaniyang liberty sa mga non-essentials, Romans 14. 

A MORE IMPORTANT ISSUE

Rather than be bogged down sa isyu ng kailan ba talaga ipinanaganak si Cristo, let us affirm na Siya ay pinanganak. Then tanungin natin, bakit?

But the main reasons are:

1. To provide salvation. He has to be Man to die for our sins. So in Incarnation, God became Man in the Person of Jesus (True God and True Man in One Hypostatic Union).

2. To fulfill the 4 Jewish Covenants (Abrahamic, Land, Davidiv, New)

3. To be the Head of the Church

4. To establish the kingdom of God on earth

5. To destroy the works of the devil

6. To redeem the Creation marred by sin

This Christmas, mas maiging tutukan ang mga isyu na ito. The reason for this reason is _______ ay isang magandang conversation opener. 

WHAT NOW?

As head ng Nieto Family, I decided to go against the tradition of non-observance I grew up with. As a student of the Bible, I am willing to go against tradition if my studies led me against it. Not all traditions are wrong but some may hinder spiritual growth. 

So mula ngayon, official na kaming magpa-Pasko. Any Merry Christmas na galing sa amin ay resulta ng mahabang (almost a decade) pagbabalanse ng mga isyu. If you think I am wrong, just pray for me. 

Ngayon nagse-celebrate na kami, what now? First just because I decided to observe doesn't mean I will observe all the traditions attending to it. Ban sa bahay si Satan (I mean Santa) Claus (dahil hindi naman siya ang dahilan kung bakit ako magpa-Pasko), Father Christmas (who needs a metaphor when you have the substance behind the shadows), at kung sino-sino pang Christmas figures other than Christ. Second, I won't go crazy sa decorations since against nga ako sa commercialization ng Christmas. Ang igagastos ko sa decorations, idaragdag ko na lang sa pagkain. Thirdly, I will start new traditions, Nieto-style. Bakit ako susunod sa traditions ng iba if I can start my own? Fourthly, ang pokus ay kay Cristo. We'll have Bible studies, fellowship meal, singing, gifting and games (anything that promote family is A-okay for me). 

LAST MUDSLING- NAGPADALA KA SA IBA

Wala akong pakialam sa iniisip ng iba. Ang reason kung bakit nagbago ang isip ko sa Pasko ay resulta ng pagkakumbinse ko sa bagay na ito. Hindi ko ito ipipilit sa ayaw pero hindi rin ako papipigil sa iba. In true Nieto fashion, we'll adapt and bastradize any Christmas traditions to fit our own idea. Dahil mahirap ang mag-go against conscience. Anything not from faith is sin, ika nga. It is blessing if your heart does not condemn you. 

Nang magsimula ang aming pamilya na magbaustismo, we're all alone. Ang Church ay against water baptism but against the current and everyone, I personally baptized my children. Sa public pool pa. Now the church is baptizing. Nang ang church ay yakap pa sa ultradispensationalism, ako lang ang nagturo ng rapture at ng paggamit hindi lang ng 7 last prison epistles (o kahit Pauline epistles) para sa Church. I was alone pero I persisted. Ngayon, gamit na ang buong NT epistles sa church. When I practiced the Lord's Supper, my family is alone. I have to administer Lord's Supper at home dahil ang church ay naniniwalang ito ay Jewish at hindi church ordinance. Ngayon naka-apat nang Lord's Supper ang church. Ano ang aking point? Kapag naniwala ako sa isang bagay, I introduce it to my family and practice together as a family, EVEN if we're against everyone. We're not afraid to be alone as long as we believe we're right. Same thing sa Chrismas. The church may think it is unbiblical or pagan but I am convinced it is not. We'll practice it even if we have to go against everyone. After all where's the fun in being part of the herd? 

I decided to join the millions of evangelicals who observe Christmas and leave all the pagans, the atheists, the cults and occults and other religions who don't. If one is known by his friends, I'd rather be identified with Christians who observe Christmas than the atheists who denied the manger or the cult who denied Jesus is God who became Man.
