What is the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit?

There are two major schools that I know of:

1. The unbelief view; and

2. The historical temporal judgment view (this occurred in AD 70)

I think the 2nd makes more sense. A person can repeatedly reject the gospel and he will still be saved if he believed during his 1 001th hearing of the gospel. Let me explain.

My position is it is a national sin committed by Israel when they rejected Jesus by ascribing His Works to Satan rather than the Holy Spirit. In committing this unpardonable sin they are promised a judgment that will not be lifted in this age (Jewish age, the age when Jesus is speaking) or the next (Church Age). This judgment historically was given in 70 AD.

The reason the Jews in Acts 2:38 is to be baptized is to be saved from this judgment.

Acts 2:40

[40]And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept on exhorting them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation!"

The reason why I think no 1 is wrong is because in this age or the next or any other age, a person can believe and be saved. A person may reject the gospel a thousand times but he'll always have a chance to be saved by believing. But this unpardonable sin is said to be unforgivable in this Jewish age or the next Church Age. Further it happened only once and can never be repeated, or rescinded, it is unpardonable after all. Yet among the unbelief view I doubt anyone will claim that if rejected once, a person forfeit the chance of salvation. So the unbelief view does not fit.

The unpardonable sin can only be committed by the generation that saw Jesus's miracles and ascribed it to Satan. No one living today qualify for that.

The unbelief view also means that you have two conditions for salvation:

1. Faith in Christ

2. Do not blaspheme the Spirit

This goes against hundreds of passages that conditioned salvation on faith alone.

Also contextually the blasphemy against the Spirit is about ascribing Jesus' works to Satan, rather than the Holy Spirit. It is not about NOT believing in Jesus. They are already unbelievers.

Matthew 12:24,28,31-32

[24]But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, "This man casts out demons only by Beelzebul the ruler of the demons."

[28]But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

[31]"Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven.

[32]Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.

The blasphemy against the Spirit occur in v 24 when the rulers ascribed Jesus' healing of the mute to the devil, the Lord off Flies rather than the Spirit, v 28. Since none of us can do that- ascribe Jesus' healing to Satan, we cannot commit the unpardonable sin.

NOTE: The rulers DID NOT SPEAK ANY EVIL AGAINST THE SPIRIT. They malign Jesus as a Satanic wonder worker.

Some of this crowd will be saved in Acts. In Acts 2 for example we have 3 000 saved.

Further this sure judgment is a theme of some parables-

Matthew 21:40-41

[40]Therefore when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vine-growers?"

[41]They said to Him, "He will bring those wretches to a wretched end, and will rent out the vineyard to other vine-growers who will pay him the proceeds at the proper seasons."

Matthew 22:7

[7]But the king was enraged, and he sent his armies and destroyed those murderers and set their city on fire.

Luke 20:15-16

[15]So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What, then, will the owner of the vineyard do to them?

[16]He will come and destroy these vine-growers and will give the vineyard to others." When they heard it, they said, "May it never be!"

Luke 21:20

[20]"But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then recognize that her desolation is near.
