Just how much references should a sermon have?

Just how much references should a sermon have?

According to Ryrie Study Bible Paul quoted Ps 14:1-3; 53:1-4; 5:9; 40:3; 10:7; 36:1 Is 59:7; just to support his argument in Rm 3:9 that both Jews and Gentiles are under sin.

Rm 3:9-18 is just two minutes.

And in Acts 13:16-41, in Paul's sermon at Pisidian Antioch, to prove that Jesus is the Son of David of OT, he basically take his audience from Genesis to 1 Chronicles, just one book shy of the last book of the Hebrew canon. That in addition to quoting 1 Sam 13:14; Ps 2:7; Is 55:3; Ps 16:10; 1 King 2:10; Hab 1:5 just to show in vs 23 that Jesus is the Savior God promised from the offspring of David. And this sermon is less than 15 minutes.

And if that is not enough, what about Stephen's sermon in Acts 7? He quoted and quoted just to prove one point- just as the father, so are the sons- Israel have always been stiff-necked, uncircumcised in hearts and ears and resisting the Holy Spirit as their fathers did, vs 51. This they did in murdering Jesus and His servants.

The Bible did not say how much references one can use in sermons. But if the sermons found in the Bible are to be followed, Paul, Peter and Stephen quotes or alluded to as many OT passages as they can- ESPECIALLY when talking to a Jewish audience.
